The American Legion Needs YOUR help!
The donations of friends and supporters help us fulfill our promise to local veterans, their families, active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and the Shelter Island community. Below are just a few examples of what Mitchell Post #281 is able to accomplish thanks to your generosity:
-
Provide military funeral details for local veterans
-
Maintain local war memorials
-
Provide support for local veterans in need
-
Provide care-packages for active-duty members deployed overseas
-
Purchase the American flags placed along rt 114 (replaced every year due to weather)
-
Organize events for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day
-
Educational Scholarships for local students
-
Sponsor local youth to NY Boy’s State citizenship and leadership training
-
Men’s and Women’s winter bowling leagues
-
Affordable space/kitchen rental for events, parties, etc. for booster members
Years of use and service has left the legion in desperate need of repairs. We are raising funds for a significant restoration of the American Legion so that it may continue to serve our local veterans, military members, and community.
If you would like to make a donation in honor of a family member, loved one, or friend.
From Memorial Day to Labor Day the American Legion Mitchell Post #281 proudly displays American Flags along Route 114. Unfortunately due to weather, these flags must be replaced each year. Help us maintain the patriotic spirit of Shelter Island by donating to the Flag Fund.

The flag fund additionally allows us to provide bronze American Legion grave markers on all veteran graves located on Shelter Island.
